How to Measure Your Bra Size at Home

Finding the right bra size can make a huge difference to both comfort and confidence. A well-fitting bra provides the support you need, enhances the fit of your clothing and helps you feel your best throughout the day.

Surprisingly, many women continue wearing the same bra size for years, even though our bodies naturally change over time due to weight fluctuations, pregnancy, exercise or simply getting older.

Whether you're shopping for yourself or buying a thoughtful gift for someone special, knowing how bra sizing works makes choosing the perfect fit much easier.

Why Bra Size Matters

A bra that's too small can feel restrictive and uncomfortable, while one that's too large may not provide enough support.

The correct size should:

  • Feel comfortable throughout the day.
  • Provide gentle support without digging into the skin.
  • Sit flat against the body.
  • Keep the straps comfortably on your shoulders without slipping.

A well-fitting bra should feel supportive without being noticeable.

Step 1: Measure Your Band Size

Using a soft tape measure, wrap it firmly around your ribcage, directly underneath your bust.

Keep the tape level all the way around and breathe normally.

Record this measurement in inches.

Step 2: Measure Your Bust

Next, measure around the fullest part of your bust while wearing a non-padded bra or no bra if you're more comfortable.

Again, keep the tape measure level and avoid pulling it too tightly.

Record this measurement in inches.

Step 3: Calculate Your Cup Size

The difference between your bust measurement and your band measurement determines your cup size.

As a general guide:

  • 1 inch = A cup
  • 2 inches = B cup
  • 3 inches = C cup
  • 4 inches = D cup
  • 5 inches = DD
  • 6 inches = E

Different brands can vary slightly, so it's always worth checking the size guide for the brand you're purchasing.

Shopping for Someone Else?

Buying lingerie as a gift can feel daunting, but there are ways to make it easier.

If possible, discreetly check the size label on one of their favourite bras. If that's not an option, consider asking a close friend or family member if they know their size.

When in doubt, choosing elegant nightwear, robes or babydolls can sometimes be easier than selecting a bra, as these styles are often more forgiving in their fit.
